Silverback Distillery

What we do

From the day we opened in 2014, the team at Silverback Distillery has crafted high-quality, award-winning spirits in the heart of Nelson County. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Rockfish River, the distillery and tasting room are a destination worth "a long visit" along Nelson's Route 151. From the refreshing, citrus-forward Strange Monkey Gin to real honey-liqueur infused Blackback Rye Whiskey to the "ultimate butterscotch bomb" Blackback Bourbon, Silverback Distillery strives to produce distinct, flavorful, local spirits from a unique mix of Virginia grain, mountain water and good ol' American craft(woman)ship.

How We Do It

Silverback Distillery is committed to producing the finest quality American bourbon, whiskey, gin, and vodka. We are dedicated to being exemplary stewards of the environment, and have made it our mission to become industry leaders in “green” distilling and production methodologies through minimizing energy usage and environmental impact.

With out-of-the-nest thinking and some innovative engineering, Silverback has created a production process that uses geothermal technologies for “chilling water” and “heating water” during the distillation process. We are proudly pioneering the use of geothermal technologies for spirits production. A dedicated heat exchanger reduces energy costs by saving the heated water from geothermal chilling processes in order to cook our proprietary whiskey mash which additionally saves on water usage. This “Chill to Spill” system uses one-fifth (1/5) the electricity required for electric and propane conventional chilling methods. We further reduce dependence on fossil fuels by using multiple-staged electric boilers rated as “98% efficient”. Multiple-stage boilers are programmed to use only the “exact energy needed” for required steam pressure. Our lighting and heat systems have been optimized for efficiency. Our distillery building was designed and built solar ready. When the planned solar panel system is installed, it will help heat the vast amount of water needed for distillation while providing interior and exterior lighting.

Silverback Distillery also partners with local Virginia farmers.  All of our rye, winter wheat, white corn, and malted barley grains are grown and harvested in Virginia.  After the distillation process is completed, the spent mash is picked up by local farmers to fertilize their fields and/or use as animal feed, all of which is EPA approved.
